In the Festival du nouveau cinéma’s camp, kids from Dr. Julien’s organization Assistance d’enfants en difficulté made an animated film that offers a brief glimpse into their lives and thoughts. Montreal, 2010. Running time 1:18 min. (in French)
In Montreal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood, the organization Petits bonheurs is known for the children’s festival it has held each spring since 2005. But it does much more than that to promote the well-being of families. Throughout the year, it offers a program of cultural activities designed to strengthen family ties, encourage creativity and build self-esteem. And it has also produced “offspring” as other Quebec cities adopt its idea of programming activities for very young children and their families.

In this latest thematic dossier, we are pleased to present initiatives that explore the intersection of the arts and social development. Social and community organizations are increasingly interested in incorporating artistic interventions in their inclusion strategies, while artists are also collaborating more with the social and/or health sector. In his webinar, François-Xavier Michaux looks at the use of cultural mediation as a vector for inclusion in the work of his organization, Exeko. Michel Lefebvre writes about the activities of Petits bonheurs, an organization that is known for its annual festival for young children but that does much more than that to promote the well-being of families in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. And the Festival du nouveau cinéma has developed a film camp for kids from Dr. Julien’s program for children at risk. Below are more Montreal examples of how the arts can be powerful tools for enabling communities to participate in change and social innovation. Enjoy!
LA MÉDIATION CULTURELLE : Le sens des mots et l’essence des pratiques
This book edited by Jean-Marie Lafortune takes a social-historical approach, using a combination of theoretical discussions and case studies to explore key issues raised by cultural mediation.
The arts and society are in constant interaction, with connections being made between the political, cultural and public spheres. This process of building bridges between the cultural and social realms is also known as cultural mediation.
These cultural actions gradually evolved into interventions aimed at fostering cultural democracy – promoting citizen participation and expression.
Cultural mediation concerns artists and other social actors in the education, business, municipal and other sectors.
Depending on the nature and goals of the project, the cultural mediator may be defined as a communicator, educator, guide, coach, etc. The cultural mediator's role is to foster connections between the cultural artifact and people.
Cultural mediation can help break down psychological and social barriers that exclude certain groups of citizens. The impact of cultural mediation is that of cultural participation.
